about me #01 my professional qualifications and experience

about me #02

It is highly advisable to check the background and credentials of the counsellor or therapist you choose to help you. Here are all the relevant details about me.

Code of ethics
As an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I am bound by the BACP's Ethical Framework for Good Practice and subject to its Professional Conduct Procedure.

Training & qualifications
My main professional qualifications are the result of four years’ training (2000-2004): Advanced Certificate and Diploma in the Theory and Practice of Individual Psychology and Adlerian Counselling, both awarded by the Institute for Individual Psychology, the training division of the Adlerian Society UK, which is an organisational member of BACP.

Type of therapy (theoretical orientation)
My core training is in Individual Psychology and Adlerian Counselling. This is an integrative system of theory and practice built on psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, existential and humanistic principles derived from the original work of Alfred Adler*. It is suitable for solution-focused brief therapy as well as long-term counselling. As an integrative practitioner I also draw on other therapeutic models I have studied such as Gestalt, Human Givens, and Energy Psychology. (Click here to read brief explanations of these terms.)

Interpersonal style
I believe in the importance of building a collaborative therapeutic relationship that is conversational, purposeful, encouraging, challenging, and creative.

Background & relevant experience
After starting as a trained volunteer bereavement counsellor in 1994,
I counselled at Centre 33 (young people's counselling & information service) in Cambridge for many years while working as administrator for a counselling charity, and was an NHS counsellor in primary care for two years.

I have also trained in groupwork (experiential group theory & analysis) and have been actively involved for 20 years in men's development groups, as leader or co-leader, in London and Cambridge. Since 2004 I have run my independent therapy practice on a full-time basis, and recently gained a professional qualification in counselling supervision.

I am an active member of Cambridge Adlerian Society.

My practice details are also listed in the following directories: www.camtherapy.co.uk, www.cpdirectory.com, www.therapy-zone.com, www.counselling-directory.org.uk and www.helptoheal.co.uk.

*Alfred Adler was an Austrian physician and psychologist who worked with Freud but developed a very different approach to understanding human nature and social problems. Adler believed in making his pioneering concepts widely accessible and became a very popular public speaker and lecturer. Some of his key ideas were ahead of his time and were later adopted by other leading psychologists and therapists throughout the second half of the 20th century. Today, Adlerian theories are studied, developed and applied successfully in the fields of education, mental health and community development in many countries around the world.

If you have any questions about my professional experience or current practice, please make contact by phone or email. All calls and messages are confidential.
